Freezing Cold Winter's.

Freezing cold Winter’s and hot Summer days,

Long school holidays, Nativity plays,

Thoughts of my childhood come flooding back

As I bank up the fire with coal and slack,

I recall bread pudding made my mouth drool,

Made from stale bread, Mum was nobody’s fool,

The hard rind of cheese was utilised too,

For cheese and tater pie, so good for you!

Mums corned beef stew was a poor man’s gruel,

With just spuds and onions added as a rule.

The smell of roast beef on a summer Sunday

With Matt Monroe singing ‘Walk Away’.

Preece’s homemade ice-cream with lumps of ice,

A nice taste of heaven – at the right price,

Gobstoppers, Liquorice wood, Pineapple chunks,

Nice Sherbet dips with liquorice to dunk.

Blackjacks, Flying saucers and Kola cubes,

Sweet cigarettes in boxes Smarties in tubes,

You bought proper Cod, batterbits and chips,

Not long on the lips a lifetime on hips!

Cooked fresh in dripping for a lovely taste,

Peelings for chickens, never any waste.

For Saturday tea, bananas were found,

Had to be mashed or wouldn’t go around,

As Dad checked results and paper he scanned

The pools forecast promised seventy five grand.

Robin Hood on telly, with William Tell,

Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train as well,

Cheyenne, Sugarfoot, Clint in Rawhide,

Or ‘What’s my line’ where contestants lied.

This is your life, Dixon of Dock Green,

Or Elsie and Ena in a brawling street scene.

Helen Shapiro - a singing sensation,

Whose wonderful songs cheered up a nation,

Acker Bilk playing ‘Stranger on the Shore’

The Beatles new song had them screaming for more,

The cars of the day were Cortina’s and Mini’s,

And housewives dress was hairnets and pinnies.

I woke from my slumber cold and alone,

The room in darkness, bright fire long gone,

I’ve been dreaming for hours, or so it seems,

But memories always, live longer than dreams.
